Collection
The library has a modest collection of materials. Its collections includes about 19,000 volumes of books, 120 periodical titles, 3500 documents, 2000 microfiches, 200 Audio-visual materials and more than 25 CD-ROM databases titles.

Organization of Collection
The Information resources are classified according to Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) system and subdivided under the following headings;

  1. Books, Conference proceedings, etc. of monographic nature:-
    Material identified by their call no. + the first three letters of the Author's name, (last name for foreign authors or first name Ethiopian authors e.g. 338.4 ABE if the Author's name is Macro Albert).
  2. Thesis:-
    These are (identified by TH + call no. the first three letters of the Author's name e.g. TH 338.4 CHE if The Author's name is Cherie Alemu).
  3. Ethiopian Publications:-
    Books, reports, conference proceedings, etc. These are information material produced in Ethiopia by governmental, non-governmental organizations and others and identified as Ethiopian collection by call no. + the first three letters of the Author's name + EDO e.g. 338.4 CHE EDO
  4. United Nations and other Intergovernmental Organizations Documents:-
    Are (identified as flexible materials by FLX + Form + call no.+ the first three letters of the Author's name e.g. FLX(041) 338.4 ABE).
  5. Reference collections:-
    (Identified by call no. + the first three letters of the Author's name + REF e.g. 338.4 ABE REF). Note that year of publication and volumes may be added to the call no. for uniqueness.
  6. Periodical Collections:-
    This category includes, professional journals, newsletters, etc. and are arranged alphabetically by their titles.
  7. Audio-visual materials (A-V) and sound recordings:-
    This sub group includes are specially collected and accessed on request and cannot be checked out unless for special purposes.

Databases
Information resources, are organized for retrieval in the form of

  • Bibliographical databases; includes in-house databases and
  • Non-Bibliographical databases: includes Potential survey, statistical databases etc.
    CD-ROM databases:-
    AGRICOLA, MEDLINE, POPLINE, WILSON, GEOREF, CAB, ICONDA, LSC, IFS, UNESCO, ERIC, INIS, ESPACE/WORLD, CCINFO etc.

How to use a Library
If you know the author and/or the title of a publication you need or if you want to know what publications the library has on a particular subject:

  • Search NAST database by the description know and look up the call no there in for retrieval.
  • Ask the librarian at the Information desk in case of difficulties
  • Fill in a bibliographic search request form," stating your requirements precisely if you require assistance. If the library does not have the publication you are looking for the library may provide the service through interlibrary loan.
    Assistance provided:-
    The librarian entertain the following types of inquires at the information desk.
    1. Guide and search request
    2. Statistical data, bibliographical references
    3. Other "how, what, where" types questions.

Membership

Researchers, planners, decision-makers, students of higher learning institutions and other individuals interested in scientific and technological issues may be allowed for purpose of borrowing, reference and consultation. Users who wish to get a proper service and to have borrowing privileges should be required to observe the rules and regulations of the library and have to fill in an application for membership at the circulation desk and submit it the department. Users who are admitted as members of the library may be issued with borrower's cards the number of which relays on the category of the user group. For the membership agreement form click here
