About STPD

  • Science & Technology Popularization Department (STPD) is one of the line Departments of the Ethiopian Science and Technology Commission (ESTA). Its core function is the popularization of science and technology through various media among which the most important are electronic and the point media. STPD aims to enhance public awareness on the important role of S&T for social advancement and the dissemination of R&D results in the development process for a better living standard of the people.

Structure

  • STPD is composed of two teams and an audio-visual service. Each team has a Team Leader and an Expert. There are eleven employees in total in the Department.

  • STPD promotes the vision and mission prescribed in the Commission's strategic plan document.

  • STPD adheres to the value system enshrined in the Commission's strategic plan.

Key Result Areas (KRA)

  • Conduct S&T Popularization Programmes to enhance public knowledge and awareness and enable the public to appreciate and use indigenous, modern, new and emerging technologies.

  • Develop the S&T awareness, knowledge and culture of the public.

Objectives

  • Popularize useful findings of science and technology through different appropriate media.
  • Support and promote all activities that complement the popularization of science and technology.

Major activities
STPD undertakes the following activities to achieve its goals and objectives.

  • Coordinates and maintains the close working relations of the Commission and the national media (Radio, Press and ETV). It is the official organ of the Commission for media outlets.
  • Transmits a weekly radio programme on science and technology in three major local languages in collaboration with Radio Ethiopia. The radio programmes are reformatted, published and distributed for reading interest & reference purposes.
  • Publishes and distributes different publications on science and technology to the reader ing community.
  • Conducts workshops and training programmes on basic concepts of R&D, school science clubs and on better ways of science coaching/teaching to secondary school science teachers and supervisors.
  • Supports the publication of scientific journals through the joint collaboration arrangements of the ESTC and the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) and the Swedish Agency for Research Cooperation with Developing Countries (SAREC).
  • Encourages the establishment of Professional S&T Associations and facilitates their legalization process with the Ministry of Justice. The Commission supports the Professional Associations Joint Secretariat (PAJS) as a central coordinating and support provider Secretariat to all S&T professional Associations.
  • Supports the holding of S&T panels, workshops, conferences and annual societal meetings.
  • Provides electronic documentation and conference facilitation services to S&T conferences and related foras.
  • Coordinates callouts to local Research Grant applicants and facilitates the holding of the annual cycle workshops for the scheme.
  • Facilitates the National S&T award system.
  • Organizes and coordinates annual S&T events like "Scientific Revival Day of Africa" and "World Science Day".
  • Coordinates and facilitates the active participation of the Commission and its affiliated Centers, Authorities and Departments & services in S&T exhibitions and foras initiated by other appropriate organizations concerned with the development and commercialization of Science & Technology products and services.
